There Will Be Hockey

Today, as much of the province moves into Phase 3 of re-opening, we know you are all waiting anxiously to understand what that means for a return to hockey. It’s important first to clarify that GKGHA is governed by the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA). OWHA and OMHA, are both members of the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) and ultimately all of these organizations are governed by Hockey Canada. This is an important point to note as we venture into Phase 3, as all hockey in our region will be guided by the regulations set out by these governing bodies, as well as our regional public health authorities and the protocols of the facilities and municipalities that we operate in. The situation is ever changing and we will do our best to keep you informed as guidelines and restrictions are adjusted to control risk.

As of today, OWHA is permitting Return to Hockey activities, under very strict guidelines. Written approval from OWHA must be received before any activity takes place. Application to return to play requires input from various community partners, including the City of Kingston and KFL&A Public Health. This is a step that our association is actively working on. Meetings with the City are scheduled, however, it should be noted that City of Kingston facilities will not be open before September. We will continue to keep you up to date as we learn more. You can expect significant changes to protocol, including but not limited to restrictions to the number of people in the building, on the ice and in the stands, social distancing, strict entrance and exit protocols and coming to the rink in full equipment.

It is important to understand where we are at in the Return to Hockey Framework, which can be found on our website. Today is the opening of Phase 2, Stage 1, Individual In-Person Training and Group Virtual Training. Stage 1 & 2 are primarily skills based, while Stage 3 & 4 (informal programming and traditional hockey) are at this point, conceptual only. Further detail on stages 3 & 4 will be provided by our governing bodies prior to progression. No tryouts are permitted at this time. In the next week or two, we will be opening registration. We are not collecting payments at this time, but we do strongly encourage everyone to complete the registration so that we have a better understanding of who intends to register and play.

It is the intent of GKGHA to provide the best hockey experience and development opportunities that we can this season. The health and safety of our participants remains our highest priority. A more detailed overview will be presented at the AGM on Monday. Please continue to monitor the GKGHA social media platforms and the website for future communications as we try to get out the most current information. We hope that your families stay safe, enjoy the rest of the summer, and will join us in the fall.
